Default looking at new cats?

went to local dealer yesterday and talked to him for a while. can't make up my mind between 400 or 500. He also had some 06 leftovers. He said the 400 5 sp. auto was almost as fast as the 500 automatic. Is this true? Anyone have any input between these two machines. I presently have a 03, 500. wnk.

honestly, yes. as far as i can tell the 500 just takes off faster but both do about the same speed (50ish mph). the 400 is obviously going to slow down more going up hills. not a lot though. my neighbor has a 250 and his does 50mph just doesnt get there as fast as i do. maybe others have different input but around here , we all are just about equal in speed. give or take a few mph.

Buy the biggest machine you can afford. Wheather it is a 400 or a 700 . If you buy big you can always go small; but if you buy small you can't go big.

Well if you already have a 500 then why are you looking at the 400?, i have an 06 500 auto and love it. the tires are larger on the back and mine came with radials, (badlands) the bigger tire and radials and a few extra ponys is why i went with the 500 not the 400. just my thoughts.

my rears are 25.11.12 and the 400 i saw was 25.10.12 looking at them side by side and riding both within minuts of each other was nite and day for me. the 400 is a good quad but it's not want "I" was looking for. as for gass milage, i would bet they are about the same. the 400 being manual might be a little better but i dout it'll be very much.

good luck.,

HR.

I have a 400 manual and a 500 TRV (its anauto). As far as fuel useage goes my 400 will go about 120miles on one tank (I think its around 3 gallons) My 500 TRV will only make it about 100miles on a tank.

I would suggest that if you might be plowing to go with the 500 Auto. Gives plenty of power in low to push snow with. So does the 400 but go bigger if you can. The 60 inch plow I have can be puched with my 400 or 500 with the same results. But, since plowing involves A LOT of forwards and back wards movements the auto is easier to shift. It can be done with the manual but not as easy as moving one lever.

Plus I believe you can get the diff-locker on the 500 but not the 400? IF I could get it on my 400 I would. For those few times I would use it, it would be very handy.

Since you own a 500, I would go with a 500.

Go with the 650 H1 You won't regreat it. Just ask the dealer for a test drive, and you WILL be driving it home

I had an 03 400 auto and purchased an 07 500. What a huge difference. Top end on my 03 was about 47 mph and is 54 mph on the 500. Also, the 500 has much more power off the line and when going uphill, particularly with a passenger and load. My buddy has a 650 which I also like but the 500 is perfect for me.

Got to say go 500. My husband and I bought a pair of 07 500 4x4 auto last November. At the same time a buddy got the 400 LE 4x4 Auto. On easy trails there is no difference but when it comes to getting up a tough hill or a long climb, it is very obvious that his machine is working way harder than ours. If he had to do it over, he may even have gone up to a 700! A lot depends on your size, how much stuff you pack on it and how you ride. I'm only 130 lbs but I handle the 500 fine! Love it!
