I think whatever is suppossed to be charging the battery isn't doing its job. What charges the battery anyway.

The magneto supplies the power to run the engine and charges the battery, lights, winches etc run off the battery. The magneto will only put out enough power to charge the battery once the engine is over 2000 rpm....

i would say a voltage regulater or a fuse, or maybe even a bad ground to the battery and to frame.
but again my bet is the voltage regulater. or fuse...

Exactly right, voltage regulator, short, bad ground, etc. Unlikely a fuse, there is only one fuse for the engine and it is a 30 amp and if that is blown the engine won't run at all.

To trouble shoot start with the free and least expensive stuff... check for shorts, bad ground, battery condition etc and go from there.

Get a meter and pull start the thing or use the starter if that will do it, put the meter on the battery with the meter on DC Volts. Even at an idle with nothing turned on but the ignition it should read at least around 12 V. Then rev it up and hold it at a fast idle, should be in the 13-14 Volt range. If it checks out this far turn on your lights and check again, still should be in the 13-14 range. If you do not have this kind of voltage and is to low more than likely you have a stator or voltage regulator problem. Best thing to do is go tohereand buy the service manual for it. In the manual it gives detailed instructions of how to test both the stator and voltage regulator. I used to have a 454 and they are very easy to repair. I don't have my repair manual any more or I would give you all the testing instructions.
