Problem: Exhaust smoke dirty or heavy
Condition Remedy
1. Oil (in the engine) overfilled - contaminated 1. Drain excess oil - replace oil
2. Piston rings - cylinder worn 2. Replace - service rings - cylinder
3. Valve guides worn 3. Replace guides
4. Cylinder wall scored - scuffed 4. Replace - service cylinder
5. Valve stems worn 5. Replace valves
6. Stem seals defective 6. Replace seals

Sounds to me like it is burning oil. As Buck already posted, there are a couple of ways for that to happen.

-Valve guides, stems, seals
-Worn piston rings
-Over filled the oil

The cheap things to try first ( I have been accused of being cheap = Frugal). Make sure when checking the oil level you are not screwing the dipstick in. Get a bottle of oil additive like mystery oil and add it to the oil. Make sure you use an appropriate amout and that it does not have the slippery additives that would cause your clutch to slip. I would also run a compression test dry and then squirt a little oil (fogging oil) into the cylinder and retry the compression test. Check the results with what your engine is supposed to have. I do now know what it is and my manual is in my shop so hopefully you have a service manual.

My other question is if you ride it a bunch under strain how much does the oil level go down and what color is the spark plug after the ride? If it is not burning any oil or very little I would say "ride -on". But you may also want to check your water level as it could have a blown head gasket and you can easily mistake the color of the smoke. Blue = oil and bluishwhite = coolant. I am pretty sure your 2002 500i is water cooled.

Hope this helps
SJ

On the 500, I believe the compression is 70-85psi with WOT (wide open throttle)

It could also be sucking oil into the intake under heavy throttle - perhaps a clogged crankcase ventilator valve. Might check the air filter box to see if oil is being pulled into there. From what I've seen in the past, bad rings usually blow smoke all the time, while worn valve guides will blow smoke only on startup.

The 500 is a very solid engine. My 02 500i is still going strong, no smoke no matter how I push it.
