Well Last night I had a little accident My fourwheeler rolled over 4 times. I was on the pond by my house. And there is long straight that was plowed out. So I desided I wanted to top out my cat. When I started to go around the bend, the rear end slid out and it was all fine tell it hit the unplowed part. Thats when the fun started. It caused the cat to slingshot itself over the bank, kind of like the sprint cars when they go over the wall. Some how, I dont know how, it went over the top me. I didnt get hurt all. But my kitty has a few bruises. it actually looks really good considering it it rolled 4 times at the speed i was going 50+mph. All i need is new front and rear fenders (ist just mainly the black mud flap parts that tore off. and a speedo. Nothing else. The frame, wheels, racks, a-rams are all straight. I even drove it home, it started right up. Man these cats are made tuff. Well my question is after i brought it home, I was going to go out riding agian so I started it up left it warm up a while. When I came out the I was backing it out of the garage, then everything died. I thought it was the ignition switch, so i tore that apart and and tried to fix it for a better connection. But that did nothing. Oh yeah I also check the fuses. They where all good. So I switched the key to the on position and tried the recoil. it popped right off and the lights came back on and everything. Ooh an Idea just came to mind, I should check the battery. How can i be so dumb. well i will let you guys know, or if you have clues what could cause this.
thanks matty

PS see Cowboy your not the only one with the bad luck LOL

Girthyguy:
Damn, hope the bad luck streak dies here with just you and I, and that nobody else has an accident! When my Dad rolled his 'Cat a few times about two weeks after we bought them, it did the same thing. I had to fix the handlebars, as they were bent clear down to the tank, and let it sit for a minute as it was flooded. After about 5 minutes, it fired right up, so we kept riding. We stopped for lunch and like you said, went to get going again, it wouldn't start. Played with the choke a bit, then checked the battery, and sure enough, loose connections. I hope that is all you have to worry about, nothing more. Oh yeah, his plug was also foulled a bit, so I cleaned it off at the time, no problems since.

I checked the dealer for a new speedo, as his plastic clear cover bit popped off, and the trip meter broke. The dealer said they want around $75 or so for the entire new speedo assembly. Not sure on the cost of the mud flap things in back, I tore one of mine off running over a tree and haven't put it back on yet. Got new bumper to fix that problem, should it arise again, and will be putting the old mud flap back on as soon as I fix my rivet gun.

Best of luck, and thanks again for all the help with my little problems!

Hey cowboy,
I think you will need A plastic rivit gun, thats if your talking about putting on the original style of rivits. i know when I had to do mine. OUr rivit gun didnt work. So our dealer was nice enough to lend me his. Well since i have to take the fenders and everything else off i think I might shave my head down and do a little porting. Does any one remeber what comapny had a cam for the cat?Was it web cams?

I think I'll just stay off my Cat for a little while, you guys are freaking me out. Usually these kinds of things happen to me. I'm happy nobody got hurt in either of these unfortunate happenings (especiallly @ 50+ mph!!) Oh Well, if the weather is nice & I do get the Cat out this weekend, you better believe I'm going to be more than careful & not try anything remotely dangerous or foolish (yea right).

I was thinking of taking mine out on the frozen river this weekend. We've had temp's below 20 for about a month and have had a week of 30 to 40 degree temps. I'm sure the ice is fine, but after reading Cowboy and your accounts, I think I'll stay on solid ground for awhile

I'm glad none of you guys were hurt and the quads seem to be OK. Stay safe.

Matty,

You could not have picked a better time for the Cam questions. I have been doing alittle calling around for the past week. INfact, I was talking to the FIRST owner of the cam for our motor. He owns an LT500F(Suzuki Quad Runner 500 4wd) and this is is ONLY mod. He said he tops out at the same speed as before, but gets there SOOOO MUCH quicker.

I also talked to an Arctic Cat 454 2wd owner that is VERY mod crazy. He ported and polished the heads the day his warranty went out. He said he gained ALOT with just this. He also put a K&N filter, Supertrapp pipe, and a dynojet kit(3 months ago from what he tells me, and he also tells me that the needle is NOT the same as the needle on his 2wd 454-- Jeff at HL told me it was a stocker). While he was at it he modified the air box lid. He cut 1/2" off the snorkel length then drilled about 4-5 5/8" holes on the part that is DIRECTLY above the filter it self(not threw the intire lid, just threw the bottom layer of plastic). He was impressed with this set up. Then he got Web cams to do him a cam (slighly differnt from the one they normally do since his has a slighly differnt head than the 500, it has even less duration if I remeber right). With the cam he had to remove the dynojet needle to get it jeted right, but after he got it jetted right he gained alot of HP. He also tried a 36 mm Mikuni and a 38mm Keihin with acelerator pump. With both aftermarket carbs he lost all low end power. So he now uses his stock carb.

Brandon(454 2wd owner) dynoed his 454(might be a 500 now cause he mentioned something about the 87.5 mm piston, but told me he was waiting for internal problems to bore and stroke his so not sure if it is a 493 or 454) and got 30 hp at the rear(25" tri-claws) wheels!!! with the 38mm carb(which made it run bad). THATS MORE THAN A 400 EX!!! Then he has gotten it to run even better now that he has gone back with the stock carb.

About the most amazing thing he told me was his current project. Turbo charging and EFI for the 454. Since he is an Electrical engineer(or somethign like that) and his brother is a Turbo speacialist it should not be a problem. I'll probaly call him back monday or something to see how this project is going and to get some for info on his bike(like what size piston, jet size, number of disc in the supertrapp, etc.)

Also, Brandon wants to sell those aftermarket carbs, anybody want??? HEHE

The Specs on the Stock cam are:
.322 lift and .224 duration
The Specs on the Web cam are($110 I think):
.340 lift and .228 duration

The reason for sure a small increase in duration was that John(LT500F owner) first got a cam with alittle more duration than this and noticed that he lost almost all lowend power so they went with almost the stock duration to keep the bottom end power.(more lift= bottom end power--- more duration= more top end power).

I also have something that includes Four Stroke Tech and a BORED AND STROKED LT500F, but I'll say more about it on a later date.

Any thing else you want to know about the cam?

You guys need not worry, trouble comes in threes'. The first was my wife rolling mine 15feet down into a creek, next was Cowboy, Then girthyguy. The rest of you are safe for awhile. The bad luck has been used up for this month.

BTW girthyguy, do you know any guys with the last name of Peeples or something like that? I was in the Navy with a guy from Shawano and I think that was his last name.

Hey Boner
Has your friend tried oval boring his carb. If you dont know what it is. Its exactly what the name emplies, the bottem of the carbopening is smaller while the top is bored bigger. This gives the illusion of hving a smaller carb for better low end and the bennifits of a bigger carb for top end. We used this on a couple of our sleds. Its eems to work really good.

I didn't ask him, but Four Stroke Tech's project includes a stock carb(34mm) bored out to 37.5mm and he says it flows like a 38mm.

Good point, the rest of you guys should be safe for a while now, as the three of us just took care of the "accident" department for a while-I hope anyway! How's the wife feeling these days? Better I hope. And for the 'Cat, get the parts yet?

Best of luck, hope things are mending smoothly.
