Default 2001 300 Brake Light Stays On

I have noticed that my brake light does not always go off when I release the hand brake. I saw that my fluid was a little low so I put some in and it is now between the marks on the window. When I squeeze the lever a few times the light will go off.

The next time I apply the brakes it stays on until I pump the lever again.

I have 300 miles on it and I have never replaced the pads. I don't use the brake very much since I have a manual and I usually keep it in the mid range and the gearing stops me. Because of the length of my property I have never been over 20 mph.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Harry

if i remember correctly, look to see if the piston(the piece that your brake lever is actually pushing in on your mastercylinder) is returning. mine did the same thing, there is a spring inside the mastercylinder and the spring was wore out and was not pushing the piston back out which kept the light on. youll know if this is the problem if there is slop in the brake lever after you hit your bakes. this is the best i can explain, hope it helps.

Thanks, yes, there is play in the lever. It looks like the MC is only available as an assembly. ($100) Did you say you just replaced the spring?

assuming the 02 and 01 brake models are the same, there is a spring with a rubber piece attached together. the rubber is there so the brake fluid does not squeez by why you hit your brakes(so your brakes will pressurize and your brakes will work) the spring is there to return your brake lever back to origanal position so you are ready to use your brakes again. on mine the rubber was wore out so fluid would get past and the system had no pressure on it so i had no brakes when i needed them.
