You can get fuel in the oil if some crap gets into the carb and stick the float so that fuel keeps flowing when the engine is off. it runs through the carb and if the intake valve is open it runs into the cylinder, around the rings and into the oil.
Fuel can also get into the oil the same way if you haul it a trailer and do not shut of the fuel.
If you had a bunch of fuel in the oil then you may want to change to oil again very soon to get all the fuel out.
Also, if the oil just smelled like gas but was not diluted, or really thin, then there is nothing to worry about. Other than making sure the carb is clean and that you use the fuel shutoff valve if you are parking it for long periods of time. I use it when I park it over night, trailer it, or store if for a few days or more.

Don't be afraid to use a good fuel additive to keep the system clean. I put an ounce of Lucas Fuel Treatment in every tank of gas. I buy it buy the gallon and use it all my equipment and vehicles.
Also, if you let your vehicle sit... even if only for a month or so, add some fuel stabilizer to the gas.
