Default Cooling fan problems

My 1998 454 is my lifeline when it comes to snow removal--lately we have been very busy in that department--my hot light came on while plowing--I checked the fuse and there was no power to either terminal--(fuse not blown)--I attempted to jump the fuse with a jumper and blew the main fuse--Where can I find out where the switches and power supply for this comes from? ---I may have a dead short but I can't figure out why the fuse panel has no power and the fuse marked fan was not blown-- thanks Ken

You have probably already checked this, but make sure you do not have snow jammed up into the fan blades keeping it from moving.

Then you might try unplugging the fan from the fan switch and jumping straight to the fan. If the fan spins then it could be the fan switch which is temperature activated. I WOUNLD NOT just go and replace this switch as it is quite spendy. There is a test procedure for it inthe service manual. I would test it and repalce it if the test fails. If the switch passes then you could have a short in the wiring harness someplace.

My friend fixed his AC hard wiring a switch to the fan. So he now manually turns the fan ON/OFF. He just has to remember to do so before it heats up! He decided to do this, for speed and cost (which I considered lazy) instead of taking the time to figure out what was causing the problem. His machine runs a little cool with the switch on all the time (his way of remembering) but when he submerges the fan it stops it from spinning and and damages the fan motor he is about to install his 2nd fan motor!

Let me know if you do not have a service manual and I can PM you the test procedures from the service manual.
