I am wondering if your machine is running rich. If it is running rich the excess fuel will burn inthe exhaust and cause it to be very hot and sometimes glow a nice cherry red color.

Restricted air flow OR your valves being out of adjustment can cause this. This extra heat may be what is causing your trouble. These are also both easy to check.

That would be where I would start.

you order it already? put some rtv on the old one, and try, as back firing is fromt way too rich, usually... and thats probably not going to fix it..

check your float, turn your fuel/air to 2.25 turns out, and try again

Tacklebox, the kitty is just hitting her prime mileage wise! I am at just over 15,000mi on my 400.

Also was it backfiring while you were riding at a high speed or was it backfiring when you hit and then let off the throttle quickly while idling in neutral?
