2002 Arctic Cat 500 Automatic 4x4
#11
Guys, I just wanted to get back and let you know how everything went, once I had the time to get to work, and to thank you for your assistance.
The short answer is that the machine is up and running like it was brand new. It has 533 original miles on the clock, and that is just how it feels, like it is just getting broken in.
I did everything you gents advised, plus I replaced the drive belt. Found out several things. The gas gauge was disconnected, so that was put back in working order. The fuel valve/petcock was out of alignment with the painted graphics/indicators on the side fairing. Besides cleaning out the petcock, I now know the place where the true settings line up. The carb was leaking, through the weep-hole on the bottom. That was serviced and cleaned and no more leaks. Changed the plug, and oil and filter and put in a new air filter. Cleaned out a few “mouse-houses” here and there, and then replaced the broken choke lever without a hitch. Added Seafoam, gassed her up, and away I went. Only other issue I now have to deal with is a broken shift-lever handle. It works fine but it rattles a bit. I will price one on the parts market and see if it is worth the cost to replace it.
Next I want to install a winch and maybe a plow for next winter. Just want to say thanks for your good advice and for getting me going in the right direction while making the ‘Cat run like it was brand new, 10 years ago!
