I own a 2001 500 man,and this past wknd I had a very bad(embarrased)recovery from a mud hole.To set up the picture here is the events as they unfolded.I am on a poker run with 300 other bikers, and I see a 500 ruby stuck off in a mud hole with lots of water(almost over the rack). So being the good helping rider ,I get in behind him and push it out of the hole and I make it through myself.I should of went on my merry way then but no I go back in the hole and get bottomed.I kept it pegged in 2nd gear low for 30 to 40 seconds and managed only 2 foot gain .So ,put it in reverse, and now I start to loose power and bad misfire or sputter(not sure). It stalls and I am lucky that the exhaust is no longer under water,so just a ten foot pull back, water is only runner board deep.I touch the starter and fires right up ,no problems the rest of the day.
What may be the cause?
On a different note, the only bike I seen to get towed out about 15 miles was 500 RUBICON THAT I PUSHED OUT OF THE MUD.

When you put it in reverse, was there water over the muffler?? That was probaly the problem.

I'm not all that familiar with ACs but with a Honda you have to plug up the carb drain. The drain on a Honda has a one way valve that fails and lets water in. Usually you can plug this and never have problems.

Sounds like you got water into carb from vent lines which are lowest entry point. Extend the vent lines up to air intake area. This is a common thing with all Cats in deep water.

Check the vent lines and the seal on your air intake.

The water was above the muffler but I don't think that would be the problem.I raised the carb. vent line as well put some di-electric grease in my spark plug boot.I have not had the chance to trial the deep water aspect yet but no problems with the carb. vent raised.I think the carb. vent was the problem,at least I got the bike out far enough that I did not fill the engine with water again, that would of been twice in a month.Luck would have to run out sooner or later.

I did the same thing at seven creeks last weekend. The exhaust went underwater and the engine quit. I got pulled out and cranked it over until it started. I must have pumped a gallon of creek water out the exhaust pipe. I got lucky though, there was only a couple of ounces of water in the air box. The Cat choked and sputtered while I was pumping out the water, but then roared back to life and I did not have another problem with it for the rest of the day.

By the way roys how do you like your 589 Titans?

Yes a 300 honda did tow me out the ten feet until the vent line cleared, the same 300 that I towed out 2 weeks earlier along with a 350 at the same time.Yes you are reading correctly, both bikes at the same time"A.C. to the rescue", it just shows that it is good to pay it forward. As for old yellow,I beleive that I am the mechanic of choise when it comes to E.S. problems and fixes.
See you all in a couple of weeks,
love you to Larry(300 honda/A.C. hopeful)
