I have a 2001 250 2x4. Recently experienced our first cold snap and snow. I looked forward to riding my Cat for the first time in these conditions. I was severely dissapointed. The engine never seemed to warm up and continuously backfired. Even after warming up for 10 minutes or more, the machine would not idle properly and died several times. I have read some about changing the carb jets to stop the backfiring situation. ANY SUGGESTIONS????

Your machine is too lean. As winter sets in the cold air is more dense than warm summer air. As you are running your machine it is breathing in more air than it does during the summer months. The only thing you can do is to richen the settings by re-jetting. Just go up one or two sizes on the main jet. If it won't idle you may also need to adjust the idle mixture screw. If you don't know how to do this then it is in your best interest to take it back to the dealer and have them do it.
