When was the last time you had the valves adjusted? Then check the plug color for proper air/fuel mixture. Is the air filter clean and vent hose not kinked? Throw in a fresh plug while your at it.

Is it an automatic? I have heard that problems with belt tension also attribute to this, but I really don't know much about it.

That thousand miles doesn't sound extrodinary to me, that's three days moderate riding where one can cruise. Although I'd highly suspect the 500I was a poor choice for anyone wanting to cruise. The grizzly being smooth, will do the long cruises much faster.

What does a grizzly have to do with this?

A thousand miles seems like a lot to me. This guy has gotten some use out of the quad, but it still shouldn't have problems like this. This isn't abuse, just a lot of riding.

I would take it back and have a firm demeanor about myself when I did so you can get something done about it. The dealer is going to try to fill your head with these stories of "I've seen this a hundred times and its nothing". Don't let that happen. Act like you don't believe a damn thing they tell you and give them the "I'm not leaving till you fix it" impression. Thats the only way I've ever been able to get anything done, and thats also why I frown on warranty work. A salesman can talk about a warranty all he wants to his own advantage, but everyone knows that no place wants to do warranty repairs and they will try all they can to prolong it or get out of it. Normally by making you wait.
