get an 02 or wait for an 03?
#1
I'm looking to replace my Scrambler 500 with a true utility and am leaning toward a 500i. Stopped by this afternoon and he has 2 02 automatics selling for $6250 or I can wait for an 03 and pay $6750.
Is the 03 worth the extra money?
Are these decent prices?
How water tight is the auto, or should I get the manual?
How does the 400 compare power wise? is the 500 worth the extra?

<< Wait for the '03 it has more power, nuff said. >>
Sorry not nuff said, I need more info than that to make an informed decision. I can save roughly $500 on an 02'
How much more horsepower?
How much more torque?
what does the additional power equate to in performance?
How much faster?
How much quicker?
More towing capacity?
I'm not looking for something sporty, I've got the Cannondale for fun. More pulling power could be worth the extra money though.

JayBR, I don't know enough about the 03 500 yet to say it is or isn't worth the extra moola But, I can say you might want to shop around for a better deal. My dealer here in CT. was selling the NEW 02 500i (leftovers) for $5700.00 for the manual and $5850.00 for the auto at the end of July. I back in December paid $6150.00 for my 500i.

Thanks
I did find a manual for $6195 at another dealer and $69 for a winch. It seems like all of the dealers around here charge MSRP for ATV's and the best you can do is look for one who doesn't charge setup and freight. I guess right now AC has a rebate going on the 02's and thats where the discount is comimg from, dealers arent discounting at all. The other variable here is I want to trade in my Scrambler so we'll see who gives me the best overall deal.
Does the 03 have a completely different engine or just some modifications to the 02 engine? Dirt Wheels made it sound like an all new engine by saying "all the 03 500's now get the sporty Eiger engine"

That must be a mis quote or the mag is wrong. The '03 500s now have the vinson motor, the vinson is a 500. The 400s get the eiger motor, the eiger is a 400. But the power output is much better on the '03s. It also has some other minor updates, a larger storage box for one. Better seat latch system. Hmmm...this list is long but I forget whats all different. Oh the most important thing, you can get the new slime green but only in automatics, thats going to set you apart from any other quad! Get an '03, you'll like it more. I should have waited myself, oh well. I'll wait for Suzuki's big bore coming out this fall.

Misquote on my part, I meant vinson.
So the Vinson motor is totally different than the O2 motor, or just an 02 motor with some improvements?
How does the 02 compare to a Sportsman 500 HO?

The vinson motor is the same motor but with a different top end I believe, its very nice though, powerfull. The '02 Cat motor is not nearly as powerful as the SP500 HO. The Sp500 is a great mud quad but I never will trust a belt drive on my quad.

Well I bought the 02 with manual tranny.
I found a dealer that had both the 02 maunual and 03 auto, no one had any 03 manuals. I test drove both machines, and while the 03 may have had slightly more power in the midrange, it was barely noticeable and certainly not enough to justify the additional $600 to me. I got a great deal with this dealer, $6000 OTD + $69 for the winch. The best part of the deal is he gave me $3500 for my 99' Scrambler, no one else was close to that.
