MPG on your cat
#1
I finialy tested the miliage of my cat the other day. I want to see how many miles I could put on my cat efore reserve. BUT I must have forgot to put the stupid hard to reach petcock back in the "ON" position and I ran out of gas completely. Lucky I was onthe way to the gas station WITH A FREIND cause I would have been in big touble. I got 102 miles on a full tank
including reserve and I do alot of full throttle riding. So, I bet some if I take it easy I could go 115 or more if I cared.
But the biggest surprise came when I filled up. According to AC I have a 4.25 gallon tank if I fill up to the bottom of the fuel neck. SO how did I get 4.62 gallons in my bike?? I didn't spill any (first time), and there is no way that small fuel line could hold over 1/4 of a gallon of gas. So, AC must under rate the capacity.

I just got my new cat& read the owners manuel,,
I know what your thinking,I never read one before either but I think I recall them saying not to fill the neck for expansion purposes.
of cource We are going to do it anyway but this likely accounts for the claimed vs. real world cap.
PPutt AC500 boot protecters Full Full of gas.

I'm almost to reserve, maybe a couple miles left, and I have like 55 miles right now. A lot of the riding on this tank was "make your own trail" stuff out in the woods, and there were days where I would ride for 30 minutes of digging around in the woods finding obstacles that I didn't even cover a mile though. I guess to get a "best mileage" figure, I would just have to ride trails or dirt roads for a full tank, but I have to be realistic in my estimates for the type of riding I generally do or I'll run myself dry.
Do you guys ever have trouble with say, a half tank, and you are on a steep grade working at a hill, maybe stopped for a minute or two scoping out a situation, and then the quad dies, because all the gas has shifted towards the back of the tank due to the incline and its not getting any? I know that was a long *** sentence, but have any of you done this? I think the fuel line must go into the bottom of the tank way towards the front or something.

Andy,
I use to own a 98 4x2 400 cat and I have had problems of it starving for gas sometimes on a hill as you mentioned. I also noticed the gas gauge was not that accuret either. Ido believe the fuel pick-up is poorly located.
