I am buying a 2003 400fis auto in a few weeks, i have seen a few posts about this before but not many responses, what are the ups and downs of this machine (every machine has flaws), I know it wont break any land speed records, but that doesnt really matter to me cause how often are you going full out anyways?? Also what is the break in procedure and how long does it take, and what if you dont follow the break in, what could happen?? Thanks for any input.Text

The 400 is a great machine. They say 100 miles for break in but supposobly 60 is fine.

The break in procedure is to stay under half throttle and be fairly easy on it, don't put it in a bind. The rings have to seat in the cylinder. You will notice some excess heat buildup because of the this. Try to make several short easy runs allowing plenty of cool down time. If you pay attention to the bike you can tell when the engine is ready, it will quit getting scorching hot everytime you cruise around the neighborhood. I never went by a mileage figure.

As a rule of thumb I ride mine for 5 real easy warm up and cool downs around the neighborhood never breaking a 1/4 throttle. Then I move up to 5 mid warm ups, try to stay under 1/2 throttle. After that I just go ridin and slowly be more aggressive. Pay attention to her and you can tell.

Where I am the 500 is quite a bit more money (about 2 grand difference) but I did talk the dealer down about 800 on the 400. We also looked at the outlander, but (no offence to anybody here) they are flippin ugly. And the Cat had a lot more to offer me (ground clearence, bigger gas tank, stuff like that) Thanks for the responses on thoughts on the machine, keep them comin. Whats the price difference where you are?? I am in Central BC.

In your opinion is it worth the 1200 for the 3 year warranty?? Or not, they have the same offer here, 3 years or a winch, I am debating the warranty and thinking about the winch, I know you can get both you just have to buy the winch which I can get here for just over 500. Thanks again for the responses.

im thinking that the warrenty is a good ideia to take ,but u cant do no performance mod to or u void the warrenty evan a slipon muffler or jets will do that. talk to your dealer and see what he/she says thay do the warrenty work and if thay sell it to u and install it thay should honer the warrenty also thats what my dealer said .but no mods for me for now or ill be living in my truck if i spend any more money on it. ill give it rest till my b day in oct than ask the wife for a performance muffler for it.although i might pick up a k&n air filter for it befor summer we'll see.

I am not planning on doing any mods, maybe a k&n air filter and thats about it, from what I have heard that are suppose to make a little bit of a difference. My dealer here says that they havent had any real problems with these quads, and that they are pretty reliable as far as things going wrong with them, so I am thinking about saving some money and just going with the winch instead of the 3 year, cause then I still get 6 months with it. But I am unsure still as how to do it, if I should keep the 3 year or not.
