AC 300 SMOKING.
#1
A couple of times so far my ac has smoked bad for about 5 min. or so after starting it. I am sure that it is oil smoke. It does not do it every time even when sitting for a couple of days.
Anyone heard of this please help!

Catman,
I have a 98 454 4x4, it never smoked at all until just recently. I took it to the shop for the regular tune up. They adjusted the valves, clutch, changed the oil and plug, cleaned air filter and gave it a good once over. I also had a CV boot replaced and a left side front wheel bearing replaced. They also installed a switch for my fan ,due to my sencer went out and the fan would not work on my last ride.
Back to your post. When I went to load my bike it started smoking. I immediately went to the mechanic and told him. He said it was nothing and to just ride it and it would quit, that it was from them moving it around with out starting it. I got home and road it around for about 5 min. and it quit.,until I shut it off and let it set for a while, then restarted, it still smoked. I called the next morning and informed the mec. again that it still smoked, and asked if by chance they caused it some how because it never smoked prior to them working on it.He told me it was just quincadence that it started after it was in the shop.
I have put the old plug in, checked to make sure the oil was not over filled, and checked the air cleaner. Still smokes like a 2 stroke for a few minutes. I plan on riding Sunday for a cople of hours to see if it will quit. Any one else have any ideas to the cause. Thanks.
Good Riding

Retreaver:
I had a very similar problem with my 97 454. It only had 1200 easy miles on it and it started to smoke all at once. I called around to the local dealers and they said they hadn't had any problems like this. One dealer tried to tell me it was the diaphram in the carb....said they had a lot of problems with them and caused excessive smoking. I told them this was blue smoke not black...they still felt it was the diaphram.
To make a long story short, I tore the top end down and took it to a local reputable shop. They looked at the piston, rings, cylinder, head, etc., all seemed to be in fine shape; however, you could see on the head it had started to burn oil. The shops only thought was that a ring went bad. They honed the cylinder, I put new rings in it and it seems to be fine. I will have to admit, it is blowing a little black smoke now. I hope which can simply be fixed with a new diaphram. I don't know, with my top end, upon inspection, being in such good condition, maybe you would want to look at the diaphram first??? Good luck.
