These days fuel injection is all the rage in the ATV industry but why hasn't the technology ever reached the 2-stroke? We investigate.

Do they even make a 2 stroke anything any more? I think the only 2 stroke machines made are weed whackers and chainsaws now.

Yes,but the range is getting smaller and smaller especially for Ktm from years past. Probably the same for others. 65,125,250,but no 300 offered now.MX

I don't think they want the complexity and cost of EFI on small bore kiddy bikes. Plus ktm won the 450 motocross shoot out in 2010 even though it was the only carbed bike in the group.2010 Motocross Shootout Conclusion - Motorcycle USA If efi had a performance advantage it sure did not show it that day.

Pin the throttle and the KTM’s engine doles out a ridiculously flat spread of power, and we mean that in the best way. Despite not employing electronic fuel-injection and instead relying on a Keihin FCR 41 carburetor, jetting and throttle response were spot-on in the high desert elevation at Racetown
The first difference obvious difference with the SX-F is that it still uses a carburetor. It’s the only 450 in this comparison still making use of the old, but reliable, mechanical fuel/air mixer.

2 strokes, except for very small engines like chainsaws, weed trimmers and leaf blowers, have for the most part gone the way of the dinosaur. The EPA didn't like that in order for them to operate, they had to burn oil and pollute the atmosphere. From 2006 on, it pretty much outlawed any larger engine being a 2 stroke. 2006 was the last year the Banshee was built for example. Very small engines need to have a 2 stroke engine to make any power because they're the only engines that can rev to the moon and not blow up. A 33cc 4 stroke engine in a chainsaw like my Poulan wouldn't have enough power to even turn the chain.

Evinrude (BRP) is putting out some pretty impressive 2 stroke outboard motors now.

Canada had the banshee up until 2008 and Australia until 2012. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_Banshee_350 .

I don't think a 4 stroke chainsaw can ever be built due to power to weight issues and a 4 stroke can not run in any position like a 2 stroke.
My 2hp Honda 4 stroke outboard motor can only be transported in two positions or it takes forever to start.

I guess outboard motors are somewhat exempt from this epa ban. If the manufacturer can make them burn cleaner such as BRP is obviously doing, then they will allow them to keep building them. And regulations are probably a little different in Canada where BRP is than they are here in the U.S.

LOL , I forgot my 2012 Ski-doo 800R e-tec is a 2 stroke!
http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...cleCode=231214 it has "Electronic direct injection" which is more sophisticated then the "Throttle bodies" EFI found on ATVs.

I,m sure some newer PWC must also be 2strokes still.

They make some 4-stroke chainsaws. Stihl has one that mixes the gas and oil like a 2 stroke. There's no crankcase oil so it can run when turned sideways. I don't know how all the others work.
