I have bought 2 three wheelers. The kid before me did some swapping,is there a way to tell a diffrence between a 185 motor and a 200. Trying to sort out his mess. How much power can I expext from a 200x carb and exhaust on both motors. One is a 82 Big Red and the other is an 83 185S. thanks

 

Well, it's pretty easy to determine a BigRed 200 engine....It has electric start and a Hi/Lo range subtransmission.......but if this guy has really been doing some swapping, it might not have it....LOL

The ONLY difference between the ATC185,185S,200, and 200S engines are the cylinder and piston/rings. Everything else is the same.
ATC185 engines will have "183cm" stamped into the back of the cylinder.......ATC200 engines will have "192m" stamped there.
Remember, a 185 cylinder can be bored to accept the 200 piston kit..and even larger to acept a bigbore kit.

The ATC185/185S engines are rated at 13.3HP
The ATC200/200S/200E/200ES/200M engines are rated at 13.8HP
The ATC200X engine is rated at 14.4HP [83-85 only]

Also.....some differences regarding replacement parts in the transmission apply to nearly all these models. Enough to make swapping parts here hard at times.

If you look underneath the front sprocket, there is a serial number stamped into the engine cases. If you gather those numbers from both engines and post them here, I will run them and tell you where those engines originated from.....including the year model.

I need it just getting back into this stuff again.The numbers on the tranny's are TB05E-2349897 the other one is TB01E-3031803 the third space in the number could either be an 0 or an O I can't tell. The vin number on these bikes are TB0500BC029898 the other vin number is JH3TB0103DC330132. I dont if this will tell you anything but tone of the carbs number is PD 35C the other one is PD 85A. To get the 200x horsepower how is this accomplished. Thanks again Knows.

The TB05E-2349897 engine is from a 1984 ATC200S

The TB01E-3031803 engine is from a 1983 ATC185S


The JH3TB0500BC029898 frame is from a 1981 ATC200

The JH3TB0103DC330132 frame is from a 1983 ATC185S

So....You do have a little mix going on here....LOL

As for the 200X horsepower level....The only difference in the 200X engine that gives it a bit more pep is the carburetor, high compression piston, slightly larger head pipe, and camshaft.....Nothing else.
Same head, valves, bore, and stroke, as the other 200 models.

 

hey knowsalot your saying to upgrade a 83 185s to a 200 i just need to change the jug,piston,and rings from a 200. Does the 200x fit the 185s motor.

 

Yes to both of your questions.

You could even bolt the '83-'85 200X engine into the 185S frame if you wanted to. All engine mounts on the cases are the same.

 

Hey knows thanks for the info. Can you bore the 185 jug to fit the 200x piston. I read somewhere about a motorcycle cam that will work is that cam better than the 200x cam.

 

Yes. The 185 cylinder can be bored to fit a stock 200X piston.

The 185 has a 63mm bore size and ALL 200 models including the X has a 65mm bore size. The cylinders on ALL the 200 models are the same except that the 200X has larger cooling fins to help it run a bit cooler.

The biggest that you can bore these engines are 67mm. When you do this, the cylinder wall is going to be extrememly thin and it will run hotter, so if you decide to go with a bigbore, try and find an X cylinder with the longer ooling fins.

As for the camshaft, the one you are talking about is from a XR200R motorcycle. It's the same cam that I run my PowRoll 230 stroker engine. It made a big difference over the X cam I was running.
