Default Big Red running wierd

I rode my Big Red the other day and it started off not running good. I let it warm up for a while, and drove it off. In first, it would run OK when wound out, OK in second, and bog down when I went to third. It did that for a while until I kept it wound out, and switched from third to second. Then I got on pavement, got it into fifth, and then it seemed to run great for the rest of the day. What could this be? I was thinking bad gas. (well, hoping anyway). I haven't had time to run it again. Could it be a break sticking until it gets hot? Please help. I checked the oil and it has enough. It's black though, probably time for a change. Where is the oil filter it's a '86 250es. Thanks.

id check the gas filter, which is located on the gas Shut off valve, looks like an up-side-down bell. and, check if its running too rich/lean, and check the spark plug, it should be clean, if not , then theres problems.....

I agree with drummer, check the filter first.

The oil filter is behind a cover that is held on with 3 bolts with 8mm heads.
Be sure when you change the filter, to put it back on correctly. If you don't.....a fried head, cam, and rockers will be the result.

I changed the oil, and let it warm up. I didn't read the replies before I took it out again (thanks for those). I went into the woods today with my buddy with the DS650 and we had a blast, well, untill I rolled my trike sideways in the mud trying to pull him out of a snowbank. It was sideways on an off-camber road that had about six inches of mud. I rolled it back over and it had oil all over the right side of the trike. That worried me. It drove fine the rest of the night and I need to wash it now. I will change/check the oil filter tomorrow. It didn't run weird at all. Thanks again for the replies. What kind of general maint. should I do to keep it running? I changed the oil already and the air filter looks good. Thanks. TW

I would try to get the owners / operators manual. It has basic info for keeping your trike up. try looking up your bike on EBAY, like : 1986 250ES : and if not there, call up honda. good luck!

On the right side of the engine, under a black snap on type cover, there is a nut with "increase<-->decrease" on the engine. What is this for? Please Help.

The little nut on the right side of the engine is for increasing or decreasing the play on your centrifugal clutch. Hope this helps.

How do I know if I need to increase or decrease the play on the clutch? I need a manual.
