I heard that you should only get 40 hours out of the stock clutches in the 85 model 250r and also heard that the later 250r's came with better clutches. What years where better and would I be able to put them in my atc?

 

That's rediculous. I have an 85 ATC250R and I got 12 years out of the clutch and I RIDE it HARD. I ride deep woods, race it, get stuck in mud, etc. The main problem with the ATC/TRX clutch is that it gets grooves in the basket from the plates and the plates eventually get hung up on them. You can file them down a couple times, but you will eventually have to relpace the basket. I never have so far. I've had 4 250R's and so far, haven't had to replace one yet. If you want to replace your clutch, Barnett and Vesra make a better clutch. ALSO, if you ride your bike in harsh environments (sand, mud, race, etc) that puts a lot of strain on your clutch, get heavy duty springs or put washers under your bolts to increase the tension on the plates. You'll reduce your slip.

Oh, all the TRX/ATC250R clutches are interchangable.

 

hes right.. on my 85 the stock clutch lasted 10 yrs..when i replaced it(4 yrs ago) i but back in honda plates and steels and run cr-500 springs..ive never had a cluch prob or a basket problem.. i ride this bike only in the sand and that is about as hard on a clutch as you can get good luck.. and yes atc/trx clutches are the same(at least the 85-6)

 

Hey, I have an 84' 250r, original clutch, and its still going strong! havent had a single problem, and the previous ownders who had it for 15 years abused the hell out of the whole trike!. What a good machine! -Mike

 

Maybe it's the small tires I just put on it. I just put some 18inch on 8 inch rims and they are small. It prob only goes about 45 tops with those on it. But it seems to me it ought to spin the tires more than it does.

 

You should be able to smoke those tires on pavement...Check for grooves in the clutch basket...it will hold the clutch plates apart and you won't get all of the power to the wheeels. It will also ruin your clutch faster.

 

Just Ride across a field up shift 2 times and nail the gas. If the clutch is bad , it will let go big time doing this. The motor will rev without pulling the 3-wheeler.

I havent had my R for too long but when I first got it the guy said he just changed the oil. Well that must have been the prob. I just checked the oil and it didnt even have a quart in it. Boy dont I feel dumb. A dipstick would sure be nice.

 

Stop right there!!! The ATC/TRX motor only holds about 7/8 of a quart of oil!!! Don't overfill it. ALSO, use real gear oil, from a motorcycle shop. Don't use 30W oil. It breaks down faster and puts more strain on your trans, clutch, etc. I used to use 30W when I was a kid, and the trans never hand-grenaded, but I would stick with gear lube (can't think of a brand right now). Your bike is geting old, and anything that you can do to help it live longer would be best.
