1983 185s
#1
I recently purchased a runnig 185s for 50 bucks everything is there except for an exhaust. I dont know how long it was ridden with out an exhaust or back pressure and i heard if a 4 stroke doesnt have back pressure it will damage the valves or blow up the engine is this true? any suggestions on an exhaust system or just a quick fix?

It doesn't even have a header pipe?
True, an open exhaust will burn the exhaust valve and eventually warp or even break in some instances.
As far as finding one, check with your local ATV salvage yard if you have one. If not, I see them on e-bay from time to time and they are very affordable there.
If you still don't find one, you can get an entire obra steel exhaust for it in the $100 range. They are louder than stock, but will not cause any engine damage.
Running an engine without a pipe isn't a big deal until you get the engine at operating temprature. The pipe acts as a conductor and actually helps absorb most of the heat from the cylinder head.
Don't run that thing until you have at least found a header pipe.
