Default New here with questions

Been reading here for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join.

A guy at work gave me a 1985 200s in exchange for some work done. I have owned dirt bikes in the past and this is my first ATC. I have been having problems with it but now am stumped on what to try next. In first gear it bogs down really bad, to the point of almost dying. If I 'feather' the throttle slowly it slowly speeds up. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Items Replaced:
1 - Fuel
2 - Spark Plug (NGK - Normal, One Size Colder, One Size Hotter)
3 - Plug Wire
4 - Air Filter
5 - Had Carb Rebuit at Local Shop

Items Done:
1 - Changed Oil
2 - Adjusted Cam Tensioner
3 - Adjusted Valves
4 - Cleaned Out Muffler/Spark Arrestor (Helped tremendously - Could really feel the difference after this was done)

The compression is good (~125 psi). The only other thing I can think of trying is the timing. Is there anything else anyone can think of that I could try?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Whats it run like in the other gears?...when you say it bogs down, is that from a standing start, 1/4 throttle, 1/2 throttle or higher yet?

Welcome to the board

All other gears are fine. Bogs down as soon as the throttle is pressed, from start to full, as said only in first gear does it do this.

Thanks,
Chris

Seems like it may not be getting enough juice......... check the fuel and filter to ensure that it is not dirty or clogged.

Is the Carb adjusted properly? It may be just a little fine tuning.

How does it Idle?

The compression spec on the 200 cc motors (according to Clymer) is 156 plus or minus 14. When i got my 200m, it was pretty doggy. Checked my compression, it was around 140. I had checked everything, diff carbs, timing. Then I pulled the pulse gen. so I could see the cam gear, to make sure it was timed with the crank. Nope, off by 2 or 3 teeth. Set it right, the compression jumped to 170, now it will pull a wheelie.Hope this helps.

Honda -
Under items replaced above, No. 1 should have been Fuel and Fuel Filter (inline).
I'm assuming the carb is adjusted right. It was adjusted per the book. Idle is fine, I let it idle for about 5 minutes Saturday. Never died.

TX - I will take a look at that this weekend.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Chris

Your compression is a little low, If it is at 125 PSI, pull the plug out squirt some oil on the piston, and try the compression test again. the specs call for 156 + - 14psi. Have you looked at the mechanical timing yet?
