dont brush off the need for experience on small bikes. i rode various motorbikes and then a 200es for several years and even after that i had a hard time handling my 250r. trikes are especially bad because you can loose it on them pretty easy and cracking the throttle at the wrong time (like many first times do) can be very bad.
defienately go with something small if you can
