Default How big is too big

My carb on my 85 atc 250r is leaking out the overflow, and i think the float needle seat is worn, i want to get a new carb, but here is my problem. How big of a carb can i get now that will work with my stock bore, that will still work good if i bore it out later. I want to put on an 38 mm, but is this too big for only having a pipe and an airfilter?

i concur. 38mm AS ran beautifully on my mild port 250. didnt lose as much bottom end as i thought, but 250's dont really make as much to brag about anyways. mid range was impressive.
