Default Need some help

I just purchased a 1981 ATC 185S. It has a couple issues. I'll explain, and would appreciate some guidance/feedback. It's relatively clean, however. I hear what sounds like valve noise..but I have determined it to be coming from the lower end of the motor. So I'm guessing...cam chain?? Anyhow, it also leaks oil when running, and I can't quite isolate where its coming from. Needless to say, I'd like to either get this motor rebuilt, or buy another good clean running motor to put in it. I have a lot of tools..but have never torn a motor down and rebuilt it. Anyone out there have a 186 motor around? Anyone interested in rebuilding mine if not? I'll pay shipping/parts...and some labor if its not too steep. I should also mention that it also leaks gas from the overflow tube on the carb...is that a sticky float problem?

thanks in advance for any help.

Are u sure it isnt a muffler guard or something like that rattling? Just an idea. My brother muffler guard did rattle and it was kinda scary sounding untile we found out what it was. It only did it when revved. Could be something loose on the stator or could be the clutch bolts coming out. Just Ideas. Hard to say without hearing it. I would say your float is stickin with your carb issue. If something got by the filters it could be debri keeping needle from seating or if it has the brass float they can leak and get gas in it so it doesnt float. Could need an adjustment? Have also seen on older well used motors the needle can wear and the pin holdin the float on also can wear creating slop in the floats.

I just got done rebuilding a fellow forum members engine....look HERE If you decide you would like to get it rebuilt; yell at me.

Yes the fuel thing can be a sticky float, or a bad needle & seat.

As far as it being something loose, I really don't think that is it. It's definitely an inner enging issue. I've read (on the forums here) that a 200 carb is pretty much interchangable...is this correct? I may have to just hunt for a new carb.

Thrash: if you are serious...I absolutely would take you up on the offer if you are willing. I may want to stretch it til winter though, I'd like to ride her some more before the snow flies here in Iowa. What part of the country are you in? I'm pretty sure I could pull the engine and get it crated for shipping. However, will you be able to do the work without the complete bike?

What carb will interchange with this trike? It's a 1981 185S...i've read that most 200 models will..but which ones won't? I may just try to find a carb on ebay or something.

these are bad about leaking oil from the drain plug and valve rocker covers . usually one of the covers is cracked from being tightend too tight. the covers and drain plug are the same and are still availible from honda , alittle over 5 bucks each

I'm pretty sure they all will fit; you may need to rejet the new carb though. The expert on this is "Knowsalot" PM him and he will 100% tell you for sure!
