I guess I stumped the 7 people that looked at my post. You know who you are.

If it was mine I would take the kick starter off and then pull off the side cover and see if you can find anything wrong with the gears. Also look at the spider gears on your kick starter shaft and kick lever to see if they look ok.

I will start there, I am here because I have little to no experience and I was guided in the right direction when it was sputtering. Thanks, I will do that and follow up with what I found. I appreciate your help.

This was a very common problem on the 1983 models and maybe some of the 1984s as well if I remember right. Usually its the 2 gears behind the small cover on the clutch cover.

I found out the hard way that Honda changed the diameter of these gears sometime in 1984 and if you had an earlier model you needed to replace both gears or the problem would actually get worse.

Over the years with my 1983 200X I probably bought 4 sets of gears, one or the other, until I bought the set then never had another problem.

Hope that helps.
Jeff

hi
the 83-85 200x has 2 springs
1--return for kickstarter
1- to keep pressure on the kickstarter gear, this is usually the one that iis too weak
needs to be replaced ,-streched out, doubled up
check the teeth to see if they are stripped from the weak spring ,(not allowing to angage all the way)--- ### 7 on bike bandit microfice
if your return spring is too weak---you can shorten it by cutting and re-bending it to fit
--as long as you dont take out too much!!!! -
1/4 to 1/2 in will make a big differance!!!!!
if you take too much out it will bind up and break the spring---###10 (bike bandit)
this does work!!!
or -- there is a bolt in back of the crank case that holds the spring stop-if you remove this bolt you can wind the spring for more tension, but be carefull too much and it could break-or bind up

as for --86--200x
spring ##6-is the spring tha holds pressure -to engage the kickstarter
###9 is the kickstarter return spring
