Default reuilding a 1983 ATC 250R?

the friend i bought my 350x from has a 83 atc 250r that he bought and after 10 min of riding it blew up.lol i was there and it was hilarious. he bought off of ebay for 700$ he lost interest in it and want to sell it to me for 400 bucks. 200 bucks now and 200 buck in a month or two? and im debating on doing this i would like to put the 400 bucks into my 350x but 400 bucks? what do i do. of course this bike needs rebuilt, how much will that cost? all the plastic is there and good neeeds new exhaust for sure front and rear bearings are bad tires are fair and needs a thumb throttle it has a twist but i dont like them, the frame needs painted also, some guy painted it yellow and it looks rediculous. what should i do guys, put the money into my 350 or start a new side project and have 2 atcs. like i said its an 83 or 84 250r so its an air cooled one. idk what to do, how much is it gonna cost to make this happen.

thanks guys

What did it do when it blew? Cost will all depend on how deep you have to go. If it's just a ring and piston job, it can be done for around $100, if you have to split the cases and get into the cam/bearings...well then it gets pricier. I will adimit...the air cooled R's are a lot of fun, but I personally would put that cash in your X. BTW: I'm in West Des Moines, and I just recently sold my 81R.

wes desmoines, heck i have family that live there small world. i really dont know what happened when it blew, we havnt tore into it at all, but all i do know is that it takes 1 finger on the kick starter to roll the engine over, no compression, i dont know if this will tell you anything? like i said before in other post i feel stupid to have to ask all this stuff, im a certified Cummins diesel tech and can do anything to a diesel engine in a truck, but when it comes to these i only know the basics. anymore info would definetely help.

thanks to all

well i did it, i bought the 250r its a 84 not an 83, we both went riding yesterday and he conned me into it (i just cant resist these atcs,, i keep thinking how cool it will be to have both a 250r and a 350x) but he desparately wanted to get it out of his garage and he told me to give him 20 bucks now and take it off his hands if i wanted it, before he junks it. so i did what the heck 20 buck, i told him id flip him some cash now and again until we reach 300-400 dollar line. weve been friends for a while so it will work out well. i looked it over and it needs some work. i think if i put a top end rebuild kit into it it will run. engine turns over fine just dont have compression. all the plastic is good. seat has no tears in it. front shocks need sealed and recharged, frame needs painted red (ugly yellow now) needs a rear brake system, tires are fair but not at all what i prefer , it has 350x lights on it that are in mint condish.tailight is good, needs a silencer (the one on it is cobbled on there) front and rear wheel bearings for sure other than that its fine, i need a project anyway my 350x is pretty much done all i need is exhaust and tires and some small items for it and im satisfied with it. one question i did have is is the 83 and 84 atc 250r rear fenders (deck) suppose to be made of fibergalss? that is what is on this bike, are these the stock fenders or are they a aftermarket deal???. well anyway im excited to get started on it one of these days, hopefully i dont bury too much money into it. im open to any opinions and suggestions so feel free to leave replys on this subject.

thanks
adam
