is there suppose to be a small gap between the carrier and the sprocket hub? or is the hub supose to almost touch the carrier? I can only get the axle to go in so far, and there is about a 1/8-1/4' gap between the hub and carrier. I am not sure if it is the right axle or not, it was not installed when I got the bike, Maybe it is an 86' axle? Is there anyway to tell themm apart by looks? Any info in this area would be helpful. Thanks

I think all 86-89 axles will fit in any 86-89 carriers. I think there should be a small gap between the carrier and hub. Just make sure everything is tight.
