The 1985 ATC250R used a round slide carburetor and the 1986 model used a flat slide carburetor, but the differences in power is minimal if any.

There is a way to tell the difference between an '85R engine and a '86R engine.

The 1985 model had black engines and the 1986 model was gray.

Gray as in gray paint or raw metal?

This information is priceless. Thank you all.

There is this man that is selling an '86, but it looks like a 1985, I told him that and thought that before I talked to everyone in here.

Nevermind, it is an '86 I looked at the pictures again. Were the wheels on the 1986 models solid gold (the whole set front and rear) or were they gold w/polished metal on the rear wheels and solid gold on front? I have seen a few '86s with polished rear wheels with accents of gold near the lugs.

It is bored .030-I assume that it has had a new top end put in three times.

What is the most you would pay for a 1986 (including freight)-that was in the same family since new and ranked a 8.5/9 on a scale 1-10, 10 being brand new?

I wouldn't do it. Look for a local bike, you never know what yuo're getting when you have to have it shipped without seeing it in person. Check out the Cycle Trader, they always have good stuff.

I recently got a pair of ATC 250R's for $1250. They were both in pretty tough shape, but I have got the '86 running to the point where I trust it to go on a trail ride.

A 1985 ATC250R, stock, except for the rear tires, recently sold on EBAY for over $3000

that alot. maybe if you could actually see it. if it has flawless factory plastic and swingarm pivot bolt removes easily, no cracks in swingarm. if your asking for advice i say never buy unseen and uninspected by yourself.

performula,

I just bought a 400ex and I love it. I've also got an Original '85 ATC 250r that has 1 sticker and different grips. Other than that it's completely stock, even the top end. PM me if you're interested, I'll give you the details. I remember when I got it that it would wheelie in 6th gear with a tug on the bars... I was 16, 160 lbs, and the motor was "fresh" but it's STILL an awesome ride. (Maybe only 5th gear wheelies now!!!) If you just want to look at one to get an idea what a good bike looks like, you can come over to St Pete and check it out. It's not mint but I've never seen one (in person) that looks better.

I was at Croom this weekend and I saw a 250r riding with a guy on a 200x... I had a flashback and thought it was the '80s all over again!

-oldRguy (wonder if I need to change it to newEXguy???)
