ATC to ATV conversion
#4
There's a company in California that does some 3 to 4 wheel conversions, in fact they sell the astro kit, but it's pricy at $1595.00 plus a $125.00 shipping charge. It requires the services of a good welder, which could raise the price to above $1900.00. It doesn't look that bad, and the components are good quality. I was considering it, but that's a lot of money to invest in a modification. I found its much cheaper to get used Honda trx250R quad components. You didn't mention what you have, but many later model quads can be fitted with earlier model engines.
I think in the long run the Honda trx is going to be worth more than a converted 3 wheeler would be, and I can get parts nearly anywhere. Many components interchange or are the same, so if you're mechanically inclined and have access to a factory service manual you can build a quad for much less. Plus you can sell the 250R frame or any of the other components to offset costs. If you like the motor you have and all the running gear is in good shape I'd take advantage of that and do the conversion yourself with quad components. if you're not mechanically inclined I'd either have a good shop do the conversion (high $$$) or sell the 3 wheeler you have and pick up a used 4 wheeler.
As far as why I swapped? I got tired of instability in long ruts in the dunes. I gave up a competitive weight advantage, but gain some stability. And I've been riding 3 wheelers for nearly 20 years. Plus now I only have to have two ramps to load a quad, not 3. :-)
Anyway if you're still interested the company who sells the Astro kit is called Hi Performance ATV and their number is 619-448-8802. There're nice people (pardon the posted # number, I hope this doesn't offend anyone)
