I want to race....but I never have!

What up everyone? I am 30 years old and I have been riding my shee here in Northern California since '99. I ride with my buddies on the weekends (Grass Valley, Elkins Flat, Sand Mountain, ect) and I visit a few local tracks in Marysville and Prarie City a couple times a month. I have always wanted to race.....I just never have! My ride is pretty much stock....other than T-5 pipes, motion pro carb kit, and RK racing chain. I have also done some other external mods....race cut fenders....removed emergency brake....UPP sliders and guides.....renthal bars and grips....
My question to all ya racers out there is.....
Should I just go for it?
Im worried that my quad wont keep up with the Jones' ya know?
Any advice for the newbie?

Jason....heres what you do. Race what ya got!! I don't know what kind of racing your looking into, but the best way to do it is race your Banshee, and from there you can tell what kind of mods you need to do. There are some guys that can hop on a stock bike and tear up the competition. Learn what you can handle as far as riding ability and if you outride your quad, build it to handle as much as you give it....

Like the other guys said, just try it with what you got, and see how you like it, a couple of years ago, I decided to try racing for fun at a local fair quad race, all I had was my son's STOCK 300ex, was able to borrow a pair of 20" Holeshots for the back, a quick front sprocket change to stay out of the rev limiter, and away I went !! The first night was muddy as he!!, everyone got covered, but the funny thing was, all the 'modified' quads were overpowering the corners, and sliding into the bales and each other, while I was in ' trail ride' mode, and took the corners like I trail ride, and ended up in 6th place for my very first race.Had to go home because of weather, but came back the next night, dry track, still didn't do real bad,got 8th out of 13 riders, but had a blast, so you go and give it all you got and you might be surprised. By the way, don't let your age stop you, I was 41 when I tried this for the first time, and beat a few teen and early 20's "racers", so don't worry about the other guys machines, you know how to handle your quad, and you know your limits. Have fun, and be safe !!!

If you race mx you will need the suspension, axle, and wheels and tires.
1.+2 a-arm cheap ones are around $500 when the prices goes.
2. aftermaket shock w/rezzie. Works are $550-$600 TCS are $850 just to name a few
3. axle +2+4 around $300.when the prices goes
4. wheels&tires around $500 front &rear with race rings. when the prices goes
total: priceless because racing is fun in you can't put a price on fun.
as far as the motor goes you will be as fast as the next guy

don't worry about doing a ton of mods. You may not even like racing although I don't see how. Just go out and try to have fun you don't have to win your first race. It is supposed to be fun any way.

I agree with Rob and Wolv...find out who's havin a race and try it. Don't worry about the upgrades to your bike, just go out and have some fun. My Rap is still pretty stock, but it gets the job done. I could probably go faster, but I have the mortgage to worry about. Do it for the fun, and if the urge takes you beyond that, go big. Have fun, and try not to ride "too far" over your head. Good Luck. Haz
