GNCC Racing Basics, Need help
My buddy ran a few hare scrambles with his stock Z. The first mod that he did was put tires on it so it sounds like you're on the right track. You definitely want to get traction -- especially on hill climbs. He also became scared when he reached for his brakes and they "weren't there". Soon after that scare he installed steel braided brake lines. After that his next mod was a pipe/silencer, which he says really helped out a lot.
I rode his Z not that long ago and was impressed with the punchiness of the quad. I think that your stock suspension should work fine for a while if you take the time to set it up correctly. You should be able to come pretty close to the correct sag adjustment.
