Default Moto-crossin

Yes, I am crazy, but Saturday at the Mcleod County Fair, my son and I rode in the motorcross race, I've always wanted to try the Wolverine, but felt the 4wd would make tight corners a little tough. After installing my Warn 424, it handled a lot better, and could power slide the corners pretty good. I took my fender flares, rack and 25" Surtraks off, put the stock 23's back on (to slide better) and added a kill tether, and I was all set !! Practice went fine, took it easy to learn the track, the boy was having fun on his 300ex, I just got done putting 400ex a arms and shocks up front, and a Raptor shock on the back, so it was soaking up the bumps like a dream. Now, RACE TIME !! the stutter bumps were a pain, and the track was just watered, so it was a slimey mess, but I took the turns great, slid that back end like a sport quad, and even managed a few doubles on the back side of the track on a short rythem section !!! Of course, against Blasters and Warriors, I was a little overmatched weight to power wise, but did mangage to beat one Warrior. My son raced the next heat, rode fine, but hit the stutters hard the 3rd lap and bent his throttle lever under so he could barely reach, and lost a lot of ground. Later, in Last Chance Qualify, it was Dad against Son, dryer track, I was gunning the heck out of it, getting some decent air, but in the 3rd lap, who should shoot by me after the stutters, but a certain 300ex, It was rough, but I kicked it up a notch to stay on his tail, but on the back, he doubled the rythem section like a pro, I was paying too much attention to his tail to pace my jump, and cased it hard over the main jump,I came down hard, bounced all four wheels off the ground, and me off the seat, over the right side, dragged by the handlebars before I let go, and rolled for about 25 feet before stopping. The Wolvy stayed up, went past the fence and stopped, I got up, hobbled over and finished, but man, I gotta tell you, I'm way too old to get slapped around like that, I got road rash on my left shoulder, ribs, and bruised all over and stiff as a board. BUT IT WAS FUN !!! After the race, found out the boy had cased the stutters bad on his last lap, and crushed the resivoir on his back shock, so he was pogo sticking it the rest of the way, so if anyone has a junk raptor shock or knows of a resivoir I can use to replace this, let me know, I'll have a lot of time to repair it, since I'm now just laying here hurting, but still smiling - but I think I'll leave the motorcross to sport quads from now on !! Sorry for the long post, but just had to give all the details !!

4 or 5 years ago I would show up at the ice races here in Minnesota with my Wolverine. I only recall one other 4x4 ever racing. Half the time they stuck me in with machines like the Suzuki LT500!

Glad to hear you had a good time at your race and didn't get banged up too badly. I hear you about getting sore after racing!

Thanks, but it wasn't all that bad!!, at least no real damage was done, today, while cleaning the caked on mud off, I did notice the key was bent over a little, probably from me whacking my chest protector on the handlebars, and the left foot peg is bent down slightly, I landed that hard !! The left shoulder is still a bit stiff, but a lot of that I attribute to being an old man that tries to ride like a kid ! Going to put the flares, big tires and rack back on and go trail riding again, now I just need to swap the rear shock into the boy's 300ex until I can find a replacement resivoir for that Raptor shock that I just put in. The fun part was sitting in the stands after our heat, and seeing the look on peoples faces when they found out I was the one they watched bounce off the track like a rag doll. The only bad part was getting off the ground, and hearing a bunch of punk kids laughing at me for wiping out in front of them, but then, it's easy to poke fun at something you don't have the guts to try !!!!

I applaud you not only for trying, but for getting up and completing the race.

Us old guys have to at least try and show them once in a while.

I totally forgot about that, went back and checked it out, there he was, sailing over a jump !!! Too bad I couldn't have had some nice clean, soft sand to land on, I'm still finding marks from where I landed ! Blasters and Warriors are hard enough to catch, can't imagine why that guy tried to run against those bigger, faster quads, but I'm glad I'm not the only nut out there !!!!!
