Because they have a crazy powerband, which can be tamed for racing with the right engine builder and mods. If you have AIM instant messege Tricked2Stroke, he's gonna be building an MX shee and he can help you out.

they arent really balanced out for jumping either. they are just a little heavy too. suspesion would need upgrading and it would need to be widened out. the power band would need to be tamed in some way.... they are better off for drag racing but with the right amount of $$$ you can be MXing anything...

Until the recent days of the 450s, there wasn't much that could give me a run for my money on the track. Prior to the 450s I raced a local SX series between 2 technical tracks (designed more for bikes than quads) and won the series by more than a third of the points 2nd place had. I'm not trying to blow my own horn, but I want people to know that it can be done. Keep in mind that this is local racing with only Amateur and Pro classes. These races were not regulated my engine size so I got an opportunity to race just about every quad, both stock and heavily modded including open class quads like my own. As much as I love my Banshee setup, I give tons of credit to the YFZ 450 and will likely build on in the near future to replace my winning Banshee.
To answer your question more directly: What's wrong with them is that they don't really fit into any class. They are referred to as 'Open-class' quads. I can tell you that the Banshee makes a better SX quad than a Raptor, Predator, Blaster, KFX 700, etc. in the sense that it has explosive power to help you through timing sections where quick power is crucial, it has a low center of gravity which helps with handling (though very poor as a stock setup), and although it weighs more than an ideal race quad it still is lighter or as light as most others with the exception of small quads like the blaster and 400ex. Lots of people will probably disagree with what I have said, but I am telling you from experience and most of all I'm saying that it CAN be done. I'm not saying that the Banshee is better and will always beat the other machines on a track. 90% rider, 10% bike.. right? So you don't think I'm making this all up take a look at my quad.
