Fastest sock quads
#15
I love pulling out this old mag when these questions come up. I still have the June 1988 3&4 Wheel Action (now ATV Action) featuring the Top Speed Shootout between the Quadracers 500 and 250, the Banshee, the 250R and the Tecate 4. I wish they'd do one for the the current models.
These top speeds and other stats were done at a real paved race track for optimum accuracy. All quads were bone stock
Quarter Mile Top Speed:
LT500------79.29
Banshee---77.05
Tecate 4---74.75
TRX250R--71.89
LT250-----71.48
Mojave----57.84 (this was included for comparison as the fastest 4 stroke at the time)
Quarter Mile elapsed time
LT500----15.09
Shee-----15.33
Tecate---15.81
LT250---16.09
250R----16.42
Mojave--19.07
60 Foot-Mark elapsed time
Shee----1.902
Zilla-----1.938
LT250--1.947
Tecate--2.064
250R---2.084
Mojave-2.162
These numbers are real and the real deal for me. If you can do better, good mods! If you don't reach those numbers, tune it up!! (if you own these quads)
But hey, you could just change the sprockets for more top end and these numbers all change.
Not sure how the current quads stack up. But it would take a precise painstaking time trial on pavement at a drag track with top shape stock quads and pro riders like they did back in 88 to get accurate numbers like these.

BTW, to all you "what's faster??" kiddies out there:
The 250R wasn't the "fastest" at anything...not even close BUT I'd say more riders got around an MX track faster on one of these than the others...even my beloved Tecate 4...ofcourse it could just be that the fastest riders happened to be on R's...I remember Sean Finley won his first race on a stock tecate 4 prototype back in 87 at (lorreta Lynn's ???I think)

The quads of today would NOT hang in a straight line confrontation with the old 2-stroke fire breathers of the '80s as long as they are fresh. I always have to laugh and shake my head when I come across these kids that are brainwashed by all the pro 4-stroke talk out there now. When modded, the Banshee will annihilate any 4-stroke, even when it's modded, in terms of straight line speed. Try to find a 80 RWHP YFZ450 or Raptor for example, you can find Banshees at that power level. As for MX tracks, well the Banshee is 1987 chassis technology, so in that respect, it holds up VERY well on the track also. Too bad Yamaha didn't see the need to update it over the years.
BTW, did they list the 1/8th mile ET and trap speed? I would be curious to see that an also the 0-60 mph times.
