Byrd wins national championship
Well, Joe Byrd wrapped up the national championship at the BlueGrass National at Ballance MotoX Sunday afternoon. Byrd headed into the final race of the series 15 points ahead of Doug Gust.
Gust took first place in moto 1, followed by local rider Jeremy Lawson and Byrd in third. Byrd worked his way up from a terrible start mid pack, passing eight riders to gain the third spot. Gust took the holeshot and lead from start to finish with Lawson hot on his grab bar and challenging for the lead in the first several laps.
In the second moto, Gust again looked to grab the holeshot, but Lawson passed him by the second lap and never looked back. Byrd got out of the hole in sixth place and passed several people, including John Natalie, to get around Gust for second. The second moto was an excellent race.
The facilities were first class, and Bill Ballance himself was running a dozer during track maintenance in the sections near the uphill triple. The soil was perfect, the layout was an incredible mix of technical and fast riding. Jeremiah Jones was on hand Sunday, the techs raised the tailgate of the Suzuki rig to give him and his family a bird's eye view.
I hope Ballance Motox becomes a permanent stop on the national circuit.
