LT250r vs. TRX250r
#1
I am wanting to get into 250 mx racing, but I have a few questions. It seems like the Honda is the bike to have and it has a 4:1 ratio of aftermarket manufacturers. I like the fact that I can get a Suzuki for 1/3 price but can it be built to keep up with and handle like the honda? Any comments on either of these bikes and any leads (websites, aftermarket manufacturers, etc) would be great.

I've raced a lt250r for about 4 years. Aftermarket parts and factory parts are harder to get and less of than the 250r. Plus the Suzuki frame geometry is bad and breaks pretty easily. I went through 2 frames in the last 2 1/2 years on my 91. There is an aftermarket company that changes the front end to increase handling. Out of the 2 your better off going with the Honda 250r if you plan on racing. I would pick the quadracer for play riding or trail riding do to the cost of the machines. But in the long run you'll wish you bought the Honda if you race it.
Are you planning racing local mx or national? If local the classes should be broke down by 2-stroke and 4-stroke not engine displacement. If that is the case and you want to run the 2-stroke class go get you one of these new GasGas 300 2-strokes. They come race ready and are new instead of 13 years old.
If your thinking nationals I would get a 400ex, z400 or cannondale and run it in the 250/440 class.

I have to agree with everyone else who posted here. I have had several of both the TRX's and LT's. The Suzuki is a good quad for all around riding, and it does have a really good motor, but it definitely lacks in the handling dept. As far as suspension, the LT does a fine job, but if you're going to race you will want better shocks and a-arms, etc. The Honda will handle much better on the track and aftermarket parts are much more available, not to say that you cannot compete with the LT, but the Honda is more well known. If you're just racing locally, the Suzuki will work, and you will probably be able to suprise a lot of people once you get it dialed in and it will cost less in the long run, but if you're serious and plan on running the nationals you'd be better off with a Honda in my opinion.

Just remember, just because it's not as good as the TRX, doesn't mean it can't win races. With the right setup and practice, you'll be smiling back to the trailer with a first place trophy on that LT. I like it because I'm usually the only one out there on an LT, and people kinda underestimate the LT's in the first place. Mine jumps and lands so smooth. Just as good as my friends 89 R frame. But, turning on his is so much better, while mine needs some extended suspension parts (one day) to keep up with his in a corner. (His also has ext. axle & arms) But I like to be different, so I love racing my LT.
Also there are a lot of websites that cater to the LT's. I just can't remember them all to give you a list. I had a hard drive failure, and lost them all. But there are plenty out there. Go to the Suzuki forum, and you can find lots of them there
