Well, it sounds like I can take the Raptor pretty far for amateur racing/hardcore recreational but if I want speed/handling I'll need a lighter atv like the 250R. I am about to go looking at several 250R's & I was just told by one of the owners that with 2" a-arms they are pretty wide at around 50" & it is the same in the rear with a 2" axle.

Does that mean that they were 46" stock? Personally I have my Raptor set at 46" & I like it ok & probably wouldn't want/need to go any wider than 48".

Also, what was the stock hp of these things, the 250R that is?

One final(maybe) question, what will happen to the 250R if they ban the two stroke from production in the next few years. Will I be banned from recreational parks & racing etc or will they just ban the mfg of them?

Chimmer, the 250R stock width was around 44". Mine had +1" a-arms and had a width of 46" with 3-2 rims. The one you are going to look at, with +2" a-arms must have "wide" offset (2-3) rims to get to 50". If you put 4-1 rims on + 2" a-arms, the width should be 46". A bone stock R is around 28HP. Add a decent pipe/silencer and you will see 32-34HP. Add some port and polish work and a new carb, and you will see high 30's. Don't let the numbers fool you, even a bone stock cylinder with a pipe is pretty quick. My motor and carb were bone stock, I just had an FMF Fatty with a Turbine Core II silencer (rejetted of course) and I smoked stock 400EXs and was slightly quicker than a good running 440EX (I was giving up a good 30 lbs in rider weight as well). If you can find a clean 250R for a good price, I wouldn't tell you not to, but if you are getting into a project type scenario, my vote is still for the GasGas By the way, I was talking to a GasGas rep at the International Motorcycle show this past weekend in Cleveland and he said the narrower 300HP is coming in the next couple of months. It will not have the big series 46 Ohlins shocks up front, but he thinks they will be long travel 19" shocks.

I have a tricked out Raptor that I race amateur level in mx and cross country. I just change the shock settings and wheel offsets/tires for each style of racing. I have about 3500 in my quad. I did it the economical way through ebay auctions and buying used when I could. My mx set up has a seat height of 30.3 inches, a 48 inch width, and a 385lbs wet weight with 1 gallon of gas in the tank. My cross country set up jacks the weight up to about 397 with a gallon of fuel but it is very competitive. I just need to improve as a rider. Elka shocks, a plus 2 swingarm, plus 4 axle and plus 2 wide, plus 0 forward arms are a must for mx and are usable for a cross country application. First, put your raptor on a diet.
