Default the proper way to break in a sport quad.

just wondering how your supposed to break in a new sport quad. like a 400EX or a Z400. I’m not sure if their is one correct way to break in a quad or if it varies depending on like brand or models. I wouldn’t know because I bought my first and only quad used. there’s no rush because i don’t plan on getting a new quad soon. but it would be nice to fill this gap in my knowledge about quads. thanks to all in advance.

Most owner's manuals give a brief explanation of the recommended break-in period and procedure. Most are, no sustained high revs for the first couple of hours, change/check oil, oil filter, coolant, air cleaner, chain tension, wheel lugs, etc at a specified time or mileage interval.

My Scrammy's manual says after 20hours change the oil and filter and no sustained revs in the first 3 hours of operation....

Some may tell you different, some might tell you to stick to manufacturer specs....

I know like the chart that tells you what to check and replace at different benchmarks. and i have the owners manual and the maintenance manual. they both don’t say anything about breaking it in. what is the main thing you want to do while breaking it in. like I’ve herd warm up the engine, like by going faster, then cool it down, going slow for a minute or 2. and repeating the process. And im glad to know someone out there is reading this post.

If you are going to break in a sport quad, here is what, IMO, you should do:

Always warm it up before you ride by starting it and let it idle for a few minutes. Do not exceed 3/4 throttle for the first hour or so. Do not hold the throttle at ANY position for more than a few seconds at any time during the break in. Change the oil and filter after the first 5 hours, and then at the 20 hour mark. The first few hours create a lot of metal shards in the engine because the manufacturing process is not quite exact, so it is very very important to change the oil soon. If you have lots of oil around for cheap, flush the engine oil at that first oil change until you can no longer see pollutants coming out. Ride it with a lot of hard acceleration and decelleration, this is to seal the piston rings correctly. Without proper engine pressure (read high loads) the rings will not seal completely and the blowby will kill your engine. I think thats about it, aside from checking all of your components to make sure they are attached and working correctly. Also be sure to keep the air filter clean and oiled. Just use the manufacturers reccommended gasoline, which is regular 87 octane. Anything more is just an excuse to spend money and could actually hamper performance and engine life. High octane is only needed with high compression and modified engines.

Ive been through lots of new quads and motorcycles, this technique has done very well for me. I even got more hp out of my raptor stock than my cousin did. They were both bought off the same truck, right next to each other. You engine will last longer and be more reliable than with the manufacturer's recommended method. It will not void your warranty either, not that a 6 month warranty is really worth a dang thing anyway.

thank you for that info. any thing else ANYBODY whants to add, or comment on is apreciated. i am still open to others but i would like to thank maddog56 for your reply. i dont think i would have a problem folowing those guidlines. that is because when i get a sport quad it would really be my first time riding a manual clutch, but not a quad so i will get used to it very quikly. however i do have expereince with riding a manual quad thanks to 250xrkrider. and it has been prooven that i know how. now if i could only talk my mom into trading in my rancher for a blaster.

I just got on mine and took off.........the only thing that I would be careful of is don't hold it at full throtle for the first 2 tanks of fuel............
I just rode the hell out of it keeping it away from real high rpms and when I did reu it up I didn't hold it long............

I have had no problems with it?........and it outran all other stock rappys around until I went into the motor........
