The Z is the new and improved 400EX. Suzuki did a 400EX knock-off. They slightly improved the suspension, handling, and weight (and you get reverse for no weight penalty!). The Z engine is a way better performer than the EX, although the EX engine is dead solid reliable.

I wouldn't say the susp/handling is any better on the z, but the engine is an improvement. Although nothing beats a honda in reliability. Ex's and z's are both great bikes, the frame on the 03' z is kind of weak for jumping big jumps, but the honda doesn't have reverse which in my mind is just a luxery with how light the ex is. If you want an extra 2-3 horse power go with the z. If you want a reliable bike that is just as good as the z besides engine and reverse go with the honda, then dump the left over money you would have spent on the z into an aftermarket pipe and a couple other perks for the ex and blow the z away. I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else who asks this question go up to your local dealer and test ride em both and see which you're more comfortable with.

When i bought my Z i first checked out the Honda, the Honda dealer and the Suzuki dealer were side by side. Both had the exact same sticker price. Bang for my buck was definately the Z!

I live in GA, it gets pretty hot in the summer. So, being that the Z was water cooled also made an impact...
