Default Buying a new quad out of state\online??

First off. My local dealer are trying to take me for a ride on a new Yammi YFZ450F. So I start searching and realize that it's cheaper to Order one from Missippi for goodness sake and have it shipped to Washington. Not just a little bit cheaper, a whole lot cheaper. They won't deal locally so it's MSRP + every fee they can nail me for, plus tax. Turns out to be a $7500.00 quad in Washington. Been doing some online searching and I found a place that sells them for $6300.00+ $250 shipping, $6550 OTD. SO that's the story. Now the questions are:
1) Have you done this?
2) Did the transaction go smooth?
3) Did you register it in your home state and then pay the sales tax?
4) Did you sell the bike before you titled it in your state?
5) DO you have and connection in Washington state that will work with you on price??

See we have our own private riding areas. I usually don't even bother with tabs/ORV tags on our bikes after they are up in the first year.

Hey 2tailfins, when you get a title for the quad, dmv didn't make you pay sales tax? I know Nevada doesn't require registration, but you still need to get a title to make sure you are the legal owner right?

Buy anything you can outta state. I have bought 3 cars outta state and everything has went smooth. just make sure that you are dealing with a reputable shop not some guy on ebay with 8 negetives. Then go and pick up your baby or ship it out however you decide.. I have learned that it is cheaper to go and pick up also saves you the peace of mind of not knowing where or who has it..

Later

When you buy from a dealer out of state and you drive to that state to pick it up, do they have to charge you sales tax? I was checking into buying one from Alba and they said if I picked it up they would charge me california sales tax

In talking around I have found that my state treats the purchase of an atv just like a car. When you register it for the first time you must present a bill of sale and pay sales tax - no matter who you bought if from or what state they are in. Just another way to get you to pay more taxes. So, the out of state option is not that great for me unless the deal is really really good because I have to pay shipping and then still pay sales tax when I register it. ouch!

jarsong, i hope that you have not purchased it yet. i hav every answer you need about washington.

i have bought a quad from arkansas brand new & the transaction went very smooth.... just took a little waiting. i found the same thing with dealers here in washington as you did, and if they don't pull thier head out, more business will continue to go away.

i did not register & title it(thus avoiding sales tax). when buying it from out of state you should get 2 documents: the bill of sale & the manufacturers statement of origin(MSO). these two papers mean you own it (it has something to do with constitutional law...)
for tabs, i went to oregon & bought an ORV permit at a shop near oregon dunes... $10.50 & it's good for 2 years.
i have not sold this bike & when/if i do i will merely write up a second bill of sale & sign over the MSO.... there's a place on the back.

a title gives you a piece of paper that, if lost, is replaceable.... you just fill out a lost title document & you get a new one. (but it requires you pay the state for Tax, titling, tabs, etc.) so if the route you wish to go is the same as the one i did you must keep your paperwork in a safe location... but the safer bet if you plan to resell it in this state is to register & title it... then the next guy that probly isn't educated on this, can register it without too much hassle.

my brother has dealt with a shop in clarkston, ID before... they don't charge all the BS... it's a drive, but will save you some $$ i'll ask him which one.
