Default Buying 2004 Banshee w/ No Title

Im somwhat new to ATVs spending most of my mine of dirt Bikes. I am about to or thinking about buying a 2004 Banshee from a friend of a friend. According to the seller the title for the bike was never given to him since he purchased it from a relative. The relative lost the titel. Im in a pickle and not sure what I should do. The seller has agreed to give me a bill of sale for the bike. What will it take for me to get the title for the bike? And what kind of process is it for florida? Whats your opinion on this? Im afraid to get stuck with a bike if I cant title.

All opinions and help are much appreciated!

John

Our TRX 90 was purchased used and even though we knew that the salw was legit the original owner also either lost or never got the title.

I just went to our local courthouse and applied for a lost title. I had to take a pencil tracing of the VIN number - just having the number was not enough. They ran a check on the number to verify that it had not already been retitled or reported stolen. Because I didn't know about needing the tracing on the first trip, it took two trips to the courthouse but basically the whole process only took a few minutes.

Allot of states like OK,KS,AR, ect,ect are non off road title states. All I ever got with my new quads were MSO's. Where did the quad come from new, was it a title required state? Those are the questions I would try and get answers to. Plus is Florida a title State.

Thanks for the replay guys,

The thing that scares me is if the bike is stolen, is there a website that I can check the VIN#.

If you have ANY fear that the bike "could" be stolen, now is the time to find out. I bought a Warrior once from a really 'nice' guy who was very convincing about why he couldn't come up with a title. The short version - It took me three years to get most of my money back. Definately not worth all the trouble.

I don't think there are any websites to check for VIN numbers, you'll need to go through your local vehicle registration office or perhaps your local police. Even then, it's not a 100% thing if they cannot find any record of theft but if they can't find any problems, then at least the path is cleared for you to re-title it. Keep in mind that if for some reason it does turn up as a stolen quad, your "friend of a friend" is going to have some explaining to do to the cops - they will insist on getting his name.
