400ex vs. raptor 660
DS is not much faster than a raptor, and that only seems to show up down towards the checkered.
A 400ex is an air cooled thumper in a pretty mild state of tune, yet it takes internal modifications to wake this bike up. It does have a lot of potential when you do this.
The raptor 660 has 8-10 more hp in stock trim than the 400ex and only weighs 16 pounds more dry. You do the math and tell me which bike is supposed to win? The raptors gearing is good enough to keep it ahead from start to finish.
Both engines are very reliable and both can take a good deal of modification and stay reasonably reliable. By the time you add exhausts and filters to both bikes however, the raptor will have about 12-15 more hp than the ex.
The ex, as I've said, handles better and is the better choice for jumping and mx type riding. The raptor 660 has decent suspension (it was actually praised when it was released) but it's behind in geometry.
For bigger guys, tighter trails, power junkies, and bolt on guys the raptor is the bike for you. If not, look towards the ex. It's more likely that you'll find one of them in that price range than the raptor.

coadman, both are great sport quads that have the potential of keeping you happy for the duration. For general trailriding, I see Raptorlegs' point. You can only go so fast through the woods, and both quads are capable of exceeding that fine line between being in control and in traction. Unless I was planning on riding a lot of fire roads or wide open fields, I would probably take the better handling 400EX. If you are more of a gearhead throttle junky, the Raptor may be more your style. Again, the best bet is to sit on them both, ride them if you can, and go from there. A few things to look at when buying used, What condition is the chain/sprockets in? How are the engine cases(anything cracked/broken from being hit with the chain perhaps?) Brake pad life? Do all the wheels roll relatively freely, any excess play at any of the joints? Is the airbox intact? Is the airfilter cleaned and well oiled? Personally, I would walk away from any quad that hasn't at least been cleaned and maintained for the sale.

thanks scooter for giving me things to look for when buying. I dont think i will be doing much if any trail riding mostly wide open areas. I have one buddy that is trying to sell his 400ex because he cant keep up with another buddys 660. so i dont want to be in the same situation as he is.

I have owned many quads over 17 years and what I havn't my close friends have. For the money you're looking to spend, I HIGHLY recomend getting the EX. The 400ex is more reliable for one, and you can pick up a really nice one for $3000. To get a nice Rappy you're looking more like 4k. So in your case, I say 400ex. If you can fork over a little more $, then I would consider a Rappy again.
I race dirtbikes, which is why I have a 450, I trail ride quads, which is why I have a 400ex. Bigger is not always better, in really tight trails you could probably go faster on a 300ex than any big bore.
