You can enroll him in the safety course. When you fill out the form that asks for his age write down "16" instead of "14". Problem solved.

I dunno, I would prolly get him a Blaster or some 300 class sport bike that isn't too expensive
If he's like any other 14yr old I know he'll be trashing on it soon as he gain confidence, if he rides with other kids then all the worse.
If you gotta get a Ute look at the Bruin, it's cheap and reliable

We decided to get the manual eiger 4x4, $4617, OTD.
We are happy about our decision and will pick it up today. Really the only other option was the Rancher cause nobody has the 2006 Big Bear in stock. The rancher is full time 4wd and I've heard that isn't good, you have to install the Warn kit. The eiger just seems a little more sporty and fun.

Parents allow kids to ride quads that are to big/heavy for them: They get injured, they get killed, and it just makes the whole sport look bad..................
Most of the huge utilities are even to big/heavy for adults: They get injured, they get killed, and it makes the whole sport look bad.....................

It's a preference and you don't have a shred of evidence to support your biased statement. Anyone acting like a jackass can get hurt on ANY moving vehicle. You interject your opinion based on your preference, to each their own......Live and let live, live and let die........IF a parent is stupid enough to let their child ride a vehicle which they are not ready for then shame on the parents.
You've made it pretty clear your preference is for small, lightweight and fast quads..that is YOUR preference.....I'd suggest a 350 lb YFZ450 is MUCH more dangerous in the wrong hands then an Outlander 400.
I lived in the midwest for 7 years as a kid/teenager, I saw kids WAY underaged on everything from snowmobiles, trailbikes to 4WD pickups and full sized farm TRACTORS. At the age of 13 I had my own Yamaha 350 two stroke snowmobile, it was heavier then any of the quads I have and every bit as fast. None of the kids I grew up were ever killed or even suffered any kind of major injury in the various motorsport activities we were part of, I had friends with those old Yamaha 3 wheelers as well.

I think he would be happier sitting on top of a sports quad. Especially if you don't have much mud. I don't see why a 14 year old would want a 4x4. I have never had that desire.
Find him a nice used 400ex. He will tank you someday. I weigh 180 and it moves me fine.

Out of the choices you've got here I would definetly go for the 4x4 Eiger... I have 2x 2005 Eiger Manual 4x4's and my other riding buddy also has one and between both of us we have yet to flip one on the trails and trust me we ride some EXTREMELY winding, up hill, down hill, sideways trails, through creeks, light mud, deep mud, snow, and over rocks, and trees (we even do some jumping and flat track racing but i'll get to that later)!!! The thing is I've been with a few of my other buddies, one rides a 2002 Bayou 250 (has been flipped front to back multiple times) & the other rides a 1999 Kawasaki 300 (has been flipped side to side multiple times). So I really believe in going with the wider & longer quads cuz if ya don't flip them you won't get hurt one way or the other. A couple of other good features for the Eiger is being able to flip from 2WD to 4WD in a instant for maximum traction & then back to 2WD for sharper more winding trails. Then if ya want to go even farther than that, you can switch from high to low for more torque and engine braking in sections with large hills (down or up) and then you can switch back to high for more speed and agility.
NOW... The only thing I don't like about Eigers is the shocks when I'm jumping things (and yes I know "Thats not what utility quads are for"), and thats just cuz they bottom out but for trail riding & just taking the bumps and hills out of the ride they definetly do their job. And one last little problem Eigers are heavy (and again I know this isn't what they're for but I do it newayz) and I do a little short track we have dugout in my friends field, when you slide through the corners the weight gets a little sketchy and it feels like its going to catch and send me on a wild ride although it never has... but I wouldn't really be suprised if it did! But like I said I know its not built for doing things that a sport quad would do and I don't really know how your kid drives or what kind of riding he'll be doing but its better to know than not to know!
But anyways I'm with you, I would go for a large one in comparison with a smaller quad with a small width!
And by the way just to get the facts straight I'm exactly 6 feet tall and weight in at about 155 and the Eiger is a great, extremely stable quad even with me being as tall as I am.

couldnt agree more about the choice of the eiger. actually i dont consider it that large of a 4x4[using my 05 400 tbx as a comparison] of the 2 the eiger feels almost sporty compared to the cat.....

Good points, but we do ride my inlaws rubicon and he loves it, but mostly on dirt trails and gravel roads. He also loves the 4x2 foremans on the dirt trails.
Anyway, I'll keep looking, probably at the 400 and smaller class.

I would get the Honda Rancher 4x4. I had one and there is no problem steering with all time 4 wheel drive. Honda makes a good product. And they don't break down.
