Default What atv to buy for MX ?

Hi.

I'm mostly going to be riding motocross tracks, my current bike
can't handle the jumps and it lacks power, it's only a 300.
I'm doing alot of jumps so it has to handle that well.
Given I haven't tried any of these machines just read reviews.

What would you choose and why, please tell me why so I can
get a better idea of what I need and add to my small knowledge of
atv's. Sorry for my english I'm from Iceland.

My choices are:

Polaris Outlaw 525.
Yamaha Raptor 700R. // Does not fit the mx category but I wanted to include it.
Yamaha YFZ 450.
Suzuki QuadRacer R450.
Honda TRX-450 ER

All 2008 models.

My size is 220 pounds, 6.3.

Thank you so much for any ideas and help !

Out of those options, I would go with either the YFZ 450, or the TRX- ER. They are both top end ATV's, with equal performance. Though the YFZ suspension is turned - down by many because of it's stiffness, you will most likely upgrade it within time if you are serious about MX.

I've never been a fan of Polaris, and I see a lot more Yamies and Honda's out on the track then Polaris's. The Yamaha 700R is more based on trail riding then MX.

Maybe go to your local dealer[s] and sit on a few, ask around, and see what one fits you the best. I'm sure I am forgetting a lot of stuff, but I don't feel like typing a whole ton right now. hehe ..

P.S. - your English is very good if it's not your first language.

i whould buy the suzuki ltr-450. the reason i whould buy the ltr-450 isa because it has the best stock suspestion out of all 450s out right now. i think it is 3 inches wider than all the other quads which on the track will shine. also it has fuel injection which i have the raptor 700 and love it. i whould not buy the 700 raptor for your self because it is not as good on the track as the 450s. also if you get into serious racing i dont think they even allow a 700cc bike in the race. my second pick whould be the yfz450 becasue it is a good race quad and you can get a good deal on it. also do you have something against a kawi kfx450? i dont like it as much as the suzuki ltr-450 but like it a little more than the yfz450.

Thanks for the answers.

Yes it's my second language...hehe..

Nothing against Kawi just didn't really think about it.

I was reading about the Can-Am Ds450, looks like an awesome quad.

Anybody tried one yet ?

I guess the first thing you need to decide is how serous do you want to get?

And how much money do you want to spend?

Some of this information is from reviews and Dirt Wheels shootout so you may already know most of the info. My experience is limited to mostly Yamaha and Honda and a quick test ride on the Suzuki.

If your wanting something you don't plan on putting money into then most people recommend the Suzuki LT-R450 because of the set up out of the box. It sets lower, wider and rides stiffer for better cornering and also has 18" tires on the rear. Dirt Wheels test riders picked the Suzuki in stock form over Yamaha and Honda. The actual quad cost more but takes less money to be competitive.

The Yamaha YFZ and Honda R are very good quads but would recommend suspension mods like shocks, A-arms and an axle. The power was actually ranked in this order in the dirt wheels shoot out: Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, this does not include Kawi.

Don't know much about the new Kawi 450 with the exception of what I have read recently. One of the guys from work has one but I haven't got to talk to him about it. I do know that It's EFI like the Suzuki but doesn't have as much suspension travel but suppose to have a lot of adjustability. Like the Honda and Yamaha I would add a-arms and a wider axle.

If I was buying a quad for MX and wanted to be a competitive racer I would buy the Honda and start adding aftermarket suspension or even look for a used one with some of the goodies already added.

The four 450's are the best choices and I believe all of them would make good MX quads. Don't get me wrong about the suspension mods, you could actually race all of these quads stock but I'm sure you know that. I quess it would be easier to give my opinion if I knew the amount you wanted to spend and what level you wanted to race.

Look at what the Bomb Squad riders. Like the elite of racing and freestyle ATV. They ride the new '08 polaris 450 MXR. Its got an awesome KTM 450 made in austria straight out of the dirt bike. Its an awesome quad. I love my outlaw 525IRS. The whole outlaw series is a good quad. But to stay in class, you need a 450 and the MXR is it right now.

i whould buy one of those cam-am or ktm bike right now. i probaly whould never buy the ktm because of the price. if you take any other 450. 450r or yfz450 expecily and put the kind of money a stock ktm 450/525 it will smoke the turd out of it. i dont recomend buy any bike the first year it come out because who knows what kind of problems it chould have.

i agree alot with whatfloyd is saying. if you are looking to trick all the way out get eather a 450r or a yfz450. but if you are not i whould get the suzuki ltr450. btw im not a big fan of the kawi with only 8.7 inches of front travel.
