Yamaha or Honda
welcome to the forums. the grizz 450 would be great for you. it has high and low range for towing hauling and steep hills. does the 450 have a manual or auto? anyway in my opinion- yamaha is a lot tougher. my honda has had everything replaced in the last year except for the rear diff, and tranfere case(it went bad though yesterday). my warrior and old moto-4 have had their share of problems but they involved flipping over hills, and running through the garage door because the brake cable broke. and my 86 moto-4 was quieter than my cousins 06 rancher 400 at when i still had it.

There is no Honda 400 ES, and I don't think there ever was. There is a Rancher 400AT (no longer made) and an old Foreman 400, but it was before the days of ES as I recall. So what model exactly are we talking about here?????
And Honda Crusher's old 300 beater is 20 years old and he is having to replace things...and that makes all Hondas crap????
My Rancher 420 is a superb machine. Fuel injected, water cooled, super low 1st gear (so you don't need a transfer case). Not a rock crawler or a monster mud bogger, but the best trail quad out there. Super stable SRA, unlike all the sloppy suspension long travel IRS mush box quad out there. With the 420 you will get more for your $$$ than any other quad on the planet.......

The Grizzly 450 beats out a 500 Honda in this shootout 450 Yamaha vs 500 Honda Can you imagine what it would do to the 400.
The above link is the 450 beating a 500 Foreman, here is a shoot with the 450 Grizzly beating a 500 Rubicon. Grizzly 450 vs 500 Rubi

I think you should just flip a coin - and then go buy a Polaris!!!
Just kidding, I had the same issues before I bought. I did buy a Polaris, but had originally decided on the Honda Rancher. Just got a better deal on an '07 X2.
I have always owned Yamaha two-wheelers but I just don't like the clunkyness of the Yammy 4-wheelers.

honda and yamaha both make great quads...i've owned both.
my opinion of Honda ranchers... don't get the ES version - piece of crap. the FM - foot shift versions seem bullet proof. i also am not fond the rancher 400 at - no low range. That said the new 420 rancher FM is a great quad. very stable, great engine and should be very reliable.
Yamaha - seem to have more features for the $$ - irs, auto, locker and low range. however the engine still has a carb - fuel injection is a major plus in altitude. Also, seems like the Yama's are a little more tippy than the Honda. Nothing that aftermarket wheels won't fix.
Griz 450 or rancher 420 fm - can't go wrong...But if you can swing a little more coin - the Grizzly 700 with power steering is amazing...this quad is revolutionary - if you get a chance to drive one, you may be digging deeper in your wallet.
