Up front on the frame just behind the bumper, there is a flat crossmember and the VIN is etched on it.
If the DMV handles titles in your state, your buddy will be on record as the owner and it should be easy to get a new title. If not, the dealer that originally sold it will have records of the original owner....if that was him.
Warning...do not buy it without a clear title, no matter how good a "friend" they may be!!! Over the years we have heard more than a few horror stories from folks who didn't get a clear title and came to regret it later on for a variety of reasons!
