400ex
#1
Hi I'm 15 and have been saving up for a new quad. I recently got a job and have been making money so I can buy one. This will not be my first quad our family actually has 6. I have been wanting one of my own though. I have been thinking about a older style 400ex but I have a few questions. Will the newer style 400s be faster (05-09) than the 99 through 04. I want to know this because my uncle has an 07 and he says they are faster. I would get the newer style except they are almost $1000 more than the older ones and idont need reverse that badly because I've never had I on my blaster. I also need to know if the older 400s are faster than the blaster. I have ridden the new ones and they are definately faster. Any help would be appreciated

I don't think that there is really much difference in performance between the older and newer. The motors didn't change except for the addition of reverse. If I recall correctly the gear ratios were changed slightly on the 05+, but all that is just sprocket changes to get the combo you want. There is also the additional weight of reverse, but I'd doubt anyone would be able to measure any difference it may or may not cause. The 99-04 carbs are slightly more adjustable (needle and air/fuel screw).
I think how the quad was taken care of and broken in will have more of an effect on performance than whether you go 99-04 or 05+. That's my personal opinion. No matter which way you go any 400ex is a solid choice.

Don't sweat the performance differences, it will be minor at best. As stated above, there were only some gearing changes, as well as the addition of reverse and cosmetics. The 400 will smoke a stock Blaster easily, although a well built 240 would probably win until the first turn.
