Looking for First ATV
Hello all, ive been bitten by the bug and have managed to scrape up about $2500 to buy an atv. Allready have the helmet and goggles. Im 35 about 185lbs and not really sure what to get. I used to ride dirt bikes but that was when I was a teenager and I know im not in the same shape I was 20yrs ago. Ive got about 40 acres of wooded trails right next door to my house with everything from xgames style ramps for the bmxers, to open field and lots of big wooded hills. I have kind of come up with a 300ex or even a 400ex as a great starter for me, but wanted some experienced opinion. originally I was looking for a utility but they all seem to out of my budget, that and a sport quad seems like more fun.
So what do you think? 300, 400, or should I go big or go home with something like a 660 or 700?
And is there anything specific to look for when buying to make sure I dont get a lemon?
And one more thing, im really thinking body armor would be a good investment. Should I just buy what I can afford or is one style better than others? I plan on seeing what the dealers have today and try some on. After all I do have a family to feed and cant do it from the hospital.

X2. I was going to type this same advice but Scooter beat me to it. I personally would get the Z over the Honda but both are GREAT quads.

I see 400s for less than 2500 all the time. ALso as for body armor, I would recommend some riding boots in addition to the helmet and goggles. Chest and neck protection get more important the faster you ride/more you jump, etc. I would buy what you can afford, brand isn't as important as fit.

Thanks for all the replies! Well, I went against everyones suggestions and i'm sure I will be wishing I went 400, but, I managed to get a pretty good deal on a 300ex. I only dropped 1500 on it so it leaves me with some cash to get boots or whatnot. What seemed to be a well taken care of 2002 with FMF exhaust, k&n air filter, decent tires, brakes, and clutch. And when I grow out of it, it will give me an excuse to get something bigger or just add to the collection. Thanks again though!
