Not sure what you mean by "Basic one" man, You mean carburated? If your worrying about one with mods you should be able to get one for $3000 with aftermarket equipment. Aftermarket don't seem to add to the value much. I'd go 450 hands down. You can go through the 400ex but, it still won't be a 450.

Completely agree. You can buy a 400EX for $1700, put another 1300 in performance parts, and it still won't touch a bone stock 450. If you are going to race, a YFZ is a great choice to start with. I will say that racing is spendy, and you need to budget for travel, entrance fees, maintenance and repairs. You WILL break parts. Also, if you are looking at mx, you might want to go for a Suzuki LT450R. Zuk pretty much nailed that one and it needs little in the way of upgrades to be competitive at most levels. The stock width is a huge bonus for mx or flat track, but would need to be addressed for many xc type events.

I think you'd be happy with any of the 450s and the YFZ is a really good one.

How old are you, and what type of racing are you looking to get into?

At 17, you are probably best served with a 450. xc and mx are pretty different setup wise, but a 47" wide 450(usually an aftermarket xc a arm setup) is usually a decent compromise. You could laso ride the 660 or Warrior for xc to see if you like it.
